I get to drive a variety on vehicles through my work. I have seen many different layouts of screens and controls. A new addition to the fleet is a Silverado EV.
I was driving the Silverado at night and tried to turn off the infotainment screen. It is pretty bright on a dark road even when dimmed to the lowest setting. I pulled over and found the screen off setting three menus deep (pretty distracting to do while driving). When I turned the screen off it went to a date and time page, aka calm or detox screen. Not good. Still way too bright for night driving. Which is weird because the drivers display can display music and navigation anyway.
The solution according to the internet is to shut down the infotainment entirely l (no music/radio), pull the fuse, and/or build a curtain or cover. Yes, I have duct taped a rag over a work truck screen before, but that’s not something I want to do to a Scout or personal vehicle.
Long story short, I am looking for a physical button. One press for Detox, two presses for screen off and one more press to turn it back on. I have seen this done in Fords, Rams and even a Honda or two.
Since I am already ranting, the Silverado EV has Auxiliary Switches. They are three menus deep as well. They are nice because I can type in my labels and pick from a limited number of icons. But not quick to access for off-road use or extra driving lights. Physical auxiliary switches or being able to add them to a favourites/shortcuts bar would be great.
What physical controls do you want?
