I'm not letting them off the hook, but new coal power plant permits in China declined by 83% in 2024, with only 9MW approved. They reduced coal power generation from June 2023 to June 2024 (the last numbers available) by 7%, although I just read it was slightly higher in the latter half of the year. Their power requirements moving to end-point electric deployment are legion, so this initial ramp-up requiring some coal wasn't unexpected in light of that. Their stated goal is to meet new challenges with renewables. Again, we'll have to watch what they do not what they say, but as their energy needs become more stable, we'll see coal being phased out, just as it is here.Yes, China is currently building a significant number of new coal power plants, leading the world in new coal power construction and accounting for a large majority of new coal plant development globally; this is despite pledges to reduce coal usage, with concerns raised about the impact on climate change goals.
