Yes, China is currently building a significant number of new coal power plants, leading the world in new coal power construction and accounting for a large majority of new coal plant development globally; this is despite pledges to reduce coal usage, with concerns raised about the impact on climate change goals.
I'm not letting them off the hook, but new coal power plant permits in China declined by 83% in 2024, with only 9MW approved. They reduced coal power generation from June 2023 to June 2024 (the last numbers available) by 7%, although I just read it was slightly higher in the latter half of the year. Their power requirements moving to end-point electric deployment are legion, so this initial ramp-up requiring some coal wasn't unexpected in light of that. Their stated goal is to meet new challenges with renewables. Again, we'll have to watch what they do not what they say, but as their energy needs become more stable, we'll see coal being phased out, just as it is here.

Hard to argue against stopping the bleeding in our government and halting any wasteful spending. I'm not against EVs but don't agree with mandates.
If it wasn't for mandates (some of them anyway), people would do whatever they wanted regardless of the impacts. Take seatbelts and airbags for example.

I get what you are saying, but seatbelts and airbags are safety concerns and minimal cost in the big picture. When you try to force an EV mandate which isn't something the majority of the country wants at this time, is when it becomes a problem. Not to mention the fact that the charging infrastructure is nowhere ready to support a large increase in EVs. I personally like EVs but know they aren't for everyone. I think if you make a product that replaces ICE cars at a comparable price, improve on the range limitations and increase an EVs viable lifespan the consumer market will make the final decision. It should not cost $30k to replace the battery pack in a vehicle after 8 or 10 years and given the rapid depreciation of EVs it unfortunately makes an old EV a disposable vehicle. I think that is a large part of the non-political opposition for a lot of people in that today an EV seems like a bad investment for many. I have a reservation for the Scout Terra with the extended range and I am hopeful that Scout will lead EVs in a new and more consumer oriented direction. Time will tell but they have started out with a winning approach in my opinion.
