NASHVILLE — Scout Motors’ detailed roadmap to sell an electric SUV and pickup straight to American consumers includes experience centers, speedy purchase transactions, stores in key U.S. markets and a flexible nationwide service footprint at launch in 2027.

Scout, which revealed the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup as production-intent concepts here on Oct. 24, is planning to open 25 brand-owned rooftops in the U.S. when production starts at a South Carolina plant in 2027.

The first 25 locations will be in 16 major markets, from New York to Miami and Seattle to San Diego.

The 25 locations will either be Scout Studios, where customers shop and interact with a sales adviser, or Scout Workshops, where service is performed, company officials say.

The Scout-owned facilities will be standalone sites or in retail centers such as malls.

Expansion

Scout plans to grow quickly after launching sales, targeting 57 retail and service sites in year two, including two in Canada.

Beyond that second year, Scout plans to add 10 rooftops annually until it reaches 100 in 2032. Ninety-three locations will be in the U.S. while seven will be in Canada, Thacker said.

“Those rooftops will put us within 200 miles of 85 percent or more of projected Scout owners,” Thacker said.

Thacker said the workshops will be the hub of its network and signaled Scout Motors is investing significantly in service operations.

Scout plans to have 1,300 service bays staffed by 1,400 technicians by 2032. A quarter of service demand will be handled by mobile service units, Thacker estimated.

Around 80 percent of each workshop’s square footage will be dedicated to service and work stalls. The remaining space will be customer-facing zones with a lounge-like amenities.

For Scout owners who live within 45 minutes of a workshop, the brand anticipates those customers will go there for service and repairs.

For more-remote customers within 200 miles of a workshop, Scout will rely on mobile service units. Scout may also create a list of certified service partners, Thacker said.

For customers that live beyond 200 miles of a workshop, Scout plans to have traveling mobile technicians, but Thacker expects those instances to be rare.

Warranty

Thacker said each Scout vehicle will come with a four-year, 48,000-mile comprehensive warranty; a seven-year, 100,000-mile electric drivetrain warranty and an eight-year, 100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty.

Scout also intends to offer extended warranties.

The brand plans to open Scout Experience Centers, and the first one will open at the company’s plant in Blythewood, S.C. It is being created as the front door of the plant, Thacker said, as well as a place for customers to take delivery, a starting point for factory tours and an off-road driving experience.

“We want this to be a community hub,” Thacker said.

Nice to hear concrete specific rollout plans. Sounds like it could work well if they place the stores / service centers in strategic places, which I'm sure they will.

And I like that owners who live up to 200 miles from a store/service center will get mobile service. Hopefully, the breadth and depth of what mobile service can fix will cover most of what can be done in-person at a service center.

I’m also intrigued by the “Mobile service”. I am personally waiting to see about the hiring for such a position and qualifications they are looking for.

Are they all going to look like this?! 😍 If it is then Scout-Studios-Stores-Service-Centers are gonna be a great space to hangout while configuring/ordering or getting service done... or even just to have a cup of coffee and watch some servicing being done!

I used the Ford mobile service for the first time last week to get an oil change on my Bronco. I was skeptical at first about it but they did a great job.

No dealer shenanigans and mobile service is a win in my book!

They'll probably just delay CDN orders till the first 2 are in place...obvious destinations are Vancouver area and Toronto area. No scout for me till 2028 :( it would appear.

The service center backlog and relying only on mobile service made me nervous with my Tesla. The south Austin center had just opened and the original Austin center was 2+ weeks behind. I moved about an hour away from both. Mobile service was still getting to me but if it were something big mobile service couldn’t do… ugh

Will admit, this is one of the most worrisome issues to me. I live 90 miles from a VW dealership. That means about 75% of the time, something is busted on my Golf. It takes 2 people, 2 half days to get anything worked on.

My then new F250 had problems - it was not doing good at all (every idiot light was coming on randomly). The dealer I purchased it from told me I could set up an appointment in 2 months. So great - a $75k vehicle that would need to sit 2 months because they were understaffed. Luckily I called around and found another Ford dealer the same distance from me. They had me come in the next day and fixed it in 30 minutes. Instead of telling me what I could do with myself - they actually had seen the problem before and realized it really was not much of one.

16 centers in the US - so that basically means probably one in Texas. God help me if something breaks. I have already talked with my local mechanics - they basically have said they will not let an EV on their property.

The only slight positive note is at least the Scout will fit on my bed over trailer - Guess I will need to keep my F250 indefinitely. Will joke, one of the best features of my LJ is flat towing - it helps me drag it to the repair shops. Abet over, and over, and over again. I am being somewhat harsh of the old girl - 95% of the problems have been fixed, only took 2 years. But the AC is out again (3rd or 4th time in 2 years - best was when it blew up on a road trip and parts flew back and bounced on the passenger floorboard).

I would rather they (and Rivian) create a series of courses and certifications so that any garage can send their people in and outfit their garage to provide all necessary service. This would open up the option to all of our small-town garages to service (at least some brand) EVs. In the early 2000s, I was stuck with going to dealers because local shops were 1) early-on unable to get certified and 2) eventually just unwilling to get certified to do service on the Prius. It's changed a lot now, but Scout would be smart to open this option up to any shop who wanted to participate.

Something like this is going to happen for Scout, very doubtful for Rivian. The Joint Venture between the two is only for the zonal architecture, these are going to be different vehicles entirely. Scout is on record saying that 80% of the components on the Terra/Traveler are going to be serviceable by the end user.
