Just hoping that it will require less than a 90 octane rating so those who choose this option can burn regular fuel...

Most engines now days use plus or premium because of the way engines are built. Especially since most engines utilize turbochargers.

It really all depends on what engine they use from VWs engine bin.

The higher octane helps for knock resistance and that's generally to get more timing and boost out of the turbo to hit peak HP numbers. Lower RPM is not generally where you're going to see knock unless you run your turbo out of its efficiency range.

Since this is a generator we are talking about, peak HP for the engine doesn't matter, they will be running it below that RPM range to keep noise and heat down... so I would assume there would be no need for premium fuel.

Premium does have better properties to it. It creates less carbon build up in the cylinders. So less maintenance needed from less wear.

As a general rule, the octane ONLY changes the knock resistance of the fuel and doesn't do anything with respect to carbon buildup. Different suppliers will put in different additive packages and sometimes the premium fuels have more detergent additives which can help prevent carbon buildup, but that's mostly only benefit for port injection engines where the fuel sprays over the intake valves. Direct injection is mostly a moot point.

Im only telling you whats taught in schooling. We are told that Premium is better for all engine doesn’t matter if it is turbo or isnt. It all matters on how its tuned. Most engines now days can adjust the to whats in it.

I've built/tuned engines so am familiar with the discrepancy between what's said and the reality ;-)

Premium may also be recommended due to the extended time the generator may not be run. Higher octane fuel will buy more time before 'old gas' with lower octane may cause damage.

Sounds like the schooling is run by the oil industry so they can sell gas that costs 70 cents more per gallon lol

What would be the better play would be to utilize ethanol free fuel for long term stability.
