Sort of disappointed that there’s no radar or LIDAR. It’s all camera based. When Musk disabled the radar on our Tesla, autopilot, FSD and cruise became useless and somewhat dangerous.

Here's where driver assistance is discussed by Scout:

Well that's extremely disappointing to hear. Check out all the videos of tesla car crashes because of it. I'm sure after enough people die though they'll have it a decent enough amount of data where it won't be as much of an issue, but I don't want to be in the beta test group.

To any Tesla or autonomous vehicle driving apologists "yOu StIlL nEeD tO pAy AtTeNtIoN!" yes I know that, but I don't trust everyone else to be paying attention all the time as evidenced by all the videos of them not. Lidar and camera combined is more secure. I'll pay the extra for Lidar.

For what it’s worth I don need it, only thing I use is ACC so I can rest my foot, don’t really need all of the Nannie’s, but that’s just me.

Oddly enough I have had nothing but great interaction with camera only systems, on teslas.

They work OK in the daytime, but I wouldn't trust it at night or reduced visibility. I guess I just like to be in control.

While LIDAR would be nice, I feel Scout wants to limit tech (to some degree) and keep costs down vs. tossing everything and the kitchen sink into these vehicles. I feel their goal is to provide enough tech to get us, and keep us, outdoors.

It worked just as well at night. If there was too much snow or fog it ensured that I was the one driving.

All I really want is lane-keep assist and emergency braking assist when the cruise control is activated, just in case I get distracted. I will always intend to have eyes on the road, hands on the steering wheel, and foot ready to brake, regardless of the self-driving technology used.

I think it's a good decision by Scout to keep the cost of engineering and equipment at a reasonable level so more people can afford their vehicles.

With enough training data it can, be fine, but we're not there yet for it to be on everyone's vehicle no matter what Elmo promises and tries to rush to put out. I'm glad it's working for you so far.

The system on my Jeep, which has been available at least six years, uses radar and a camera. It has Forward Collision Warning with braking, Advanced Cruise Control with distance settings, and Automatic High Beams. As long as Scout can provide similar features, I'll be happy. Anything that requires a connection to the steering system (Lane Keeping) just adds complexity and cost.

May need to be a combination (LIDAR, Cameras, Thermal Imaging, FLIR...) to protect us from large animals and to protect pedestrians..

Maybe autonomous vehicles will drive improvements in the technology....

..."around 2.1 million deer-vehicle collisions occur in the US annually. ....And based on 1,012,465 deer-vehicle collisions and 96 million hourly traffic observations across the United States, we show that collisions are 14 times more frequent 2 hours after sunset than before sunset....* https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(22)01615-3

Future Ford Vehicles Could Get Large Animal Detection System
"...proposed system would utilize a thermal camera capable of detecting large objects such as animals, even in dark conditions..."

subaru's eyesight tech was worked quite well for us when it comes to adaptive cruise control. I hate lane assist, actually, especially on black ice(!) let me drive the vehicle.. and I echo not needing so much tech, even though for longer trips I would welcome the ability to not think about the drive, not sure we need it for the first gen of Scout vehicles.

Camera-only based systems, like Tesla can work well but if certain conditions change, then you're increasing the chances of the system failing. Fog, rain, shadows, bright lights, etc can hinder the system working correctly because it doesn't have another systems like rador or lidar, which work better under those conditions, to validate against.

It might be a cost savings move by Scout, just like it was by Tesla, but a bit disappointing if thats true.
