Why the split tailgate… besides being able to sit on them? Makes it hard to reach in the back and harder even to climb in. Won’t it interfere with some hitches? Seems to me more negatives than positives.

Not for on-street parking charging such as many cities are implementing. Parking meters are giving way to mini charging stations.

I've thought about it...I'm hoping the top does go up high/far enough that I can stand under it and not get rained/snowed on, though.

True. After our upcoming trip to the US, we’ll be suspending further travel. We’ll see if charging stations fall into disrepair and get vandalized by Trump supporters who want to accelerate the move back to oil and large gasoline engines.
