Since we're probably not getting Android Auto / Carplay...How about an analog line in?

Today's VW/Rivian/Scout announcement seems to indicate that the software/infotainment will be tightly tied to Rivian's, and they'll probably follow Rivian's hubris into the void by not offering Android Auto and Carplay. I wish they'd address this directly, but at this point I'm not holding out much hope.

So....Can we at least solve the bluetooth problem for third party AA/CP screens and hide an analog line in somewhere? Or at least run the amp input somewhere easy to access?

Dang it. This is one of the dislikes about my current vehicle I hoped Scout would fix. I feel like it's similar to a full-size spare: a deal breaker for some, completely fine for others. There are still a lot of features about these vehicles that I like - so I'll probably grit my teeth and deal with it.

Rivian software is pretty good so i could care less. But it is gonna be annoying.

Why would they not use AA or Car Play? That might be a deal breaker for me. Android Auto is so convenient for me.
Rivian has said that they think fully controlling the user experience is better. The reasons they give as why are mostly nonsense (there was a recent interview where they claimed AA/CP take over the whole screen, which is not at all true for either current or future AA/CP iterations).

The fairly obvious real reason is that implementing AA/CP would make it harder to paywall basic features like voice texting control and media (spotify/apple music/youtube) behind a monthly subscription "connectivity" package.

maybe its a Apple and Android issue with partnering with them and its not Rivian does have a subscription, but also Apple isnt the easiest to work with.

This unfortunately sounds totally plausible.

I mean...I gotta believe google and apple want companies implementing those services. - For example there's no licensing fee for either.

Toyota was able to patch in Carplay functionality to an entire platform that was never designed for it with a $60 dealership software upgrade. Can't be that hard.

Unfortunately this is the world we live in is subscription based sadly. It would be nice to see scout do a premium package one time fee.

I wouldn't call the fight already. While it's true the Scout will be using the Rivian framework, the implementation is going to be vastly different.

  • Scout is going to have physical controls, Rivian doesn't (other than the limited steering wheel functionality)
  • Scout is going to have coil sprung suspension, Rivian uses air suspension and automatically adjusts ride height to meet rated range
  • Scout is using a solid rear axle with real diff lockers, Rivian doesn't use either
  • Scout is going to have metal sway bars (unclear if it's going to have a sway bar disconnect), Rivian uses some sophisticated hydraulic system instead of sway bars.
  • Scout is using an On/Off button, Rivian doesn't
  • Scout has real mechanical door handles
There's a bunch of other differentiating items but that is a quick list off the top of my head. Long story short, the vehicles are going to be different enough that Scout/VW is not going to be able to simply copy and paste the Rivian GUI into the Scout screen.

Does Rivian allow you to use Google Maps? Or do they have their own Rivian maps? I maybe won't buy without Google maps integration, they've saved me lots of time and made my life much easier.

It has already been confirmed by Scout that they will support AA/ACP.

Rivian and Tesla do not and its fine without it. its not perfect but it does 90-95% of what you need and their support for apps will grow over time without needing AA/CP.

and from a business/revenue pov, Rivian and Tesla have no need to add it, it only creates a negative for them.

and why would you need an analog line? im sure they will have BT connection if you want to stream music.

really dont understand this infatuation with AA and CP. probably because the vehicle you have now has a crappy infotainment system.
There are some weeks where I drive 3 or 4 rental cars on top of my car and my wife's. Having the same UI for my maps + music apps and the same digital assistant for all of my dictation and text-to-voice functions is invaluable. If I had to spend time getting up to speed on every different cars UI when I switched I would lose my mind.
