My hope is that come launch, there will be a Solid State Battery option available. Whether or not that comes to fruition, I'd like to be able to use the Range Extender functionality with a reserve battery pack that would reside where the RE is planned to be, and probably a second one in the front trunk area to balance the weight. Hell if there is space that I'm not using for people or cargo, I'd like to have the option to use that space to add SSBs to extend the range of the vehicle, even in a ruggedized roof carrier if my application requires it.

Really this is just onboard DC (Fast?) Charging.

To do this, all that is needed is a an open standard charging port (like a mini-NACS port,) utilized by not only OEM, but also 3rd party range extender options. The multiple expansion ports (4 additional would be nice,) should be a standard feature, not an option, regardless as to whether the initial purchase includes the RE or not. Think about future upselling opportunities. Also with this modular design, one could buy a Scout model without the RE at first, which just might help to get the buyer under the price ceiling for tax incentives to kick in, then upgrade later, perhaps with the tax credit dollars.

At its core, the RE is a device to increase the amount of electrical power the battery pack has. The source of that electricity on day one will be a petrol generator, but just like the Scouts of the 60s and 70s that are still active, I plan on this vehicle to live on long after I meet my demise.

As technologies advance, the Scout should have the ability to easily swap the RE, or to add one on later, with a bio-diesal generator, waste cooking oil generator, hydrogen fuel cell (in 100 years), Solar, Wind, Hydro (when camping by a river,) nano nuclear, or even just a supplemental battery pack using a next gen, or next next next gen battery chemistry.

As long as the connection to the battery pack is a inexpensive, standard, bi-directional port, (so if it's an SSB, it can also be charged while the primary battery pack is being charged,) including bi-directional BMS2BMS communication, than the options for future expansion are unlimited. Tremendous added value for minimal upfront cost.

note: I release all claims to any IP generated here, to Scout Motors.

Amazing Idea! Even better transferring any patentability to Scout Motors! (Pay attention Scout! You're the Assignee)

How heavy would these solid state batteries be?
