  1. 4-Cylinder Harvester EREV engine confirmed by CEO Scott! + 0-60mph, range, payload, towing specs discussions

I am a little mystified by the decision to do the rear mounted engine. Could have easily been a situation where the EREV buyers just give up the frunk and have conventional mounting, cooling, etc. using existing parts (a la Ramcharger). But, as been stated elsewhere here before, keeping both...
  2. Range extender versus standard gas engine - what can be omitted?

Problem with ethanol is that it's endothermic, taking more energy to produce per unit volume than it provides. At least corn based ethanol here in the US is. Brazil figured it out with sugar cane and their processes and I believe they're at a point where it's a net positive energy content...
  3. Range extender versus standard gas engine - what can be omitted?

For me personally it's not about disliking or even not preferring BEV, it's about having options. We're probably going to replace our X3 with an iX when time comes, but at least one vehicle in the household will have to use gasoline as a fuel source because of its pervasiveness. Just in case...
  4. Range extender versus standard gas engine - what can be omitted?

Running miles is how GM does (did) it. Not sure how they factor in when the car isn't moving while the engine running. Doesn't happen often but every so often it will cycle the engine at stops if the battery is near depleted. An hour meter makes sense too, probably more so.
  5. Range extender versus standard gas engine - what can be omitted?

Don't be fearful of the maintenance requirements of the range extender. If you operate the vehicle in pure EV mode 80% of the time, you've extended by a factor of 5 the service intervals (based on total vehicle miles) of the engine compared with the same engine in an ICE application. I think...
  6. Range extender versus standard gas engine - what can be omitted?

On the second gen Chevy Volt engine the only accessory is a belt driven water pump for the engine coolant loop. The inverter and battery pack coolant loops use electric pumps. And the engine could too, as BMW does that. There's no alternator, it uses an accessory power module that converts...
  7. LKAS and unencrypted CAN bus for Comma.ai Openpilot

Respectfully disagree on several points: No company should be required to provide OEM parts or documentation outside its repair network. People who don't want that construct can shop elsewhere. If sales are impacted enough by that approach then different business decisions will be made...
  8. LKAS and unencrypted CAN bus for Comma.ai Openpilot

And part of exercising that freedom is choosing whether to purchase from a given manufacturer if it's a totally closed ecosystem vs. forcing them to dilute product in support of DIY. Which I don't consider installation of non OEM software DIY. So consumers who want to tinker with or replace...
  9. LKAS and unencrypted CAN bus for Comma.ai Openpilot

There will always be tension between right to repair and supportability by the provider. We as consumers can't realistically expect to eat our cake and have it too. Let me install whatever I want on the system/platform you developed, while at the same time expect flawless operation, security...
  10. LKAS and unencrypted CAN bus for Comma.ai Openpilot

This reminds me of the Android vs. IOS debate as it relates to cyber security. A closed ecosystem (no third party access) like IOS offers some benefits in this regard as there is tighter control on access and coding standards, etc. which reduces risks in specific ways, and an open system like...
  11. 4-Cylinder Harvester EREV engine confirmed by CEO Scott! + 0-60mph, range, payload, towing specs discussions

Agreed 💯. Given the hints Scott dropped in the podcast, "turbo, don't need that", engine being sourced "in region" (which I'm interpreting as NAFTA vs. SC/NC/TN/GA), it needing to be SULEV20 compliant, and the cooling challenges with rear location, I think they're going to resurrect the CBPA...
  12. Senators propose killing $7500 EV tax credit, adding new $1,000 tax for road repairs

Even as a beneficiary of the EV tax credit that was in place back in 2017, I don't believe in it. Or any other kind of tax deduction or credit of any kind. I'd just rather pay less tax to begin with. There's an inherent unfairness in deductions and credits. Why should renters subsidize my...
  13. 4-Cylinder Harvester EREV engine confirmed by CEO Scott! + 0-60mph, range, payload, towing specs discussions

Starting to wonder if the 4 cylinder boxer engine from a related brand. One can only hope. Unless that's already implied in this post with the clinking beers :)
  14. 4-Cylinder Harvester EREV engine confirmed by CEO Scott! + 0-60mph, range, payload, towing specs discussions

There's supposed to be a 240v outlet capable of 7.2kw output on the Terra at least. Could use that. Keep the truck "on", everything else on it powered off, and keep it fueled up and it should cycle the engine on and off to keep a minimal charge on the battery once you run that down to a...
  15. Rivian Has a Scout Harvester Engineering Model (Scout has 5 Test models out in the US)

True, but given these products are nearly three years out that's kind of the point of this entire forum, at least for now. I stand by my earlier statement though. Rivian has been to date so committed to BEVs that it's only logical to conclude they're just providing software development support...
  16. Rivian Has a Scout Harvester Engineering Model (Scout has 5 Test models out in the US)

x3. Only reason Rivian has a Harvester mule is so their devs can code the hybrid modes into the battery/energy management.
  17. Maintainability and Accessibility of Range Extender

Agreed on a system like that being probably too complex for the benefit, and for oil and filter changes (and anything else on the service schedule) which I'm assuming (hoping) wouldn't be necessary. But what about repairs requiring access to the cylinder head. What if I need to change an...
  18. Maintainability and Accessibility of Range Extender

That would be need to be done with an integrated movable mounting system to lower the engine without external lifts, stands or support of any kind. All the lines, harnesses, external connections of any kind would need enough slack built into them to allow the range of motion needed by the...
  19. Maintainability and Accessibility of Range Extender

How about this (CUKB engine code), since it's already used in the Audi A3 e-tron. Just get rid of the transmission and replace it with a generator. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/MC-10124696-9999.pdf
  20. Maintainability and Accessibility of Range Extender

Also, in looking at the photo of the engine am reminded you won't need the alternator (will be replaced by an accessory power unit fed from the propulsion battery) nor the AC compressor. That'll tidy it up some.
